Paris Winter Treat

It is well worth spending a few francs on a public transport ticket before starting your Paris jaunt. There are choices of transportation, such as buses, trains and the Metro underground railway system, which is swift, clean, and efficient. The added advantage of traveling on the Metro of course, is that in the Paris drizzle you can stay dry and warm while getting from one place to another.

You can transfer lines free of charge and see most of the city by hopping from one station to another. Everybody goes to Paris to see art, wander around museums and shops, listen to music, and most of all, to eat the mouthwatering French cuisine on offer around every corner. The food in Paris is to die for, and served with style and efficiency.

Parisians are understandably passionate about what they eat, where they eat it, and at what time. You will find the restaurants begin to fill up for lunch at around twelve noon and do not empty until at least two or three. They will then begin filling up again for dinner at around eight. Prices include service according to the law in France, but it is a good idea to leave some change when paying the bill.

French bread, cheese, coffee and pastries are all world renowned for being the absolute best anywhere. It is a very good idea to try as many of the different varieties of bread as you can manage in the time available, they are all delicious.

Try not to hurry meals in France, the Parisians take many hours over each gastronomic delight, savoring the experience as if it might be their last. They will think you very odd if you rush through your meal, pay the bill and run for the door.

The Parisian style of cooking is known as La Grande Cuisine and rightly so as it certainly is impressive. The standard against which all other styles of cuisine are measured, it is the benchmark of the world when it comes to culinary pleasure. Even a small snack is turned into a memorable experience in the cafes of Paris.

Expertly prepared courses are complimented by rich sauces, redolent with wine, nestling beside the freshest and most delicious vegetables purchased fresh daily from excellent Paris food markets. Delicate, rich little pastries, pristine and looking untouched by human hand, are served on dainty porcelain plates, and accompanied by fragrant coffee.

The wine flows like water in this timeless city and there is nothing nicer than sitting in a crowded street caf, sipping a glass of French Bordeaux and watching the crowds roll by.Should you still have room for a little bijou snackette, try taking a tour of the Chez Angelina, a Viennese caf formerly highly popular with Coco Chanel. Thick, sweet hot chocolate is served on a silver tray and accompanied by fresh cream and delightful pastries. Scrummy.

Torture yourself until dinner with a vigorous stroll around the Paris boutiques along the Champs Elysees. Take a detour up the side streets and tinker about in the little shops selling antiques, furniture, leather bags and shoes. The windows alone are worth seeing and photographing.

At the end of the day there are some wonderful places to stay in Paris, not the least of which is one of Paris best kept secrets, a luxurious houseboat moored near the Eiffel Tower. The most unusual yet wonderful base from which to see Paris, you will find it on www.selectholidayvillas.com.
